A 7500 mile journey across Asia along the old Silk Road

Pics of Kyrgyzstan

We stayed at Sary Tash on our first night in Kyrgyzstan.  It looks pretty bleak and it is, but even though it only has a population of around 1,500 it is a major crossroads in the Alay Valley.  The village is an important road junction connecting China to the East over the Irkestam Pass [9,859 feet], the way we had come; Tajikistan to the South over the Kyzylart Pass [14,042 feet] on the Pamir Highway and to the North over the Taldyk Pass [11,860 feet] to Osh and the Fergana Valley.
