Tabriz: The Blue Mosque

Tabriz is the most populated city in Iranian Azerbaijan and was one of the historical capitals of Iran. It was occupied by the Russians several times in the 20th Century, including during both World Wars.   The city is about 4,500 above sea level so it is relatively cool in Iran’s blisteringly hot summer - but in gets very chilly in Winter!

The Blue Mosque was built in 1465 on the orders of Jahan Shah the ruler of Kara Koyuniu whose kingdom covered major parts of modern Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkey.  The Mosque was then very severely damaged by an earthquake in 1780, including the collapse of the two main domes. These were finally reconstructed in 1973 and ongoing refurbishment and renovation continues.
