The Ark of Bukhara
The Ark of Bukhara, also called The Citadel, is a massive fortress that was initially built around the 5th century BC. As well as being for defence the Ark comprised a town that was inhabited by the various royal dynasties that controlled the area around Bukhara. It ceased to be a fortress after it fell to Russia in 1920.
Today the walls have been substantially reconstructed and that work continues. The external walls are about 2,600 feet, enclosing 9.8 acres and their height varies from 52 to 66 feet.
