A 7500 mile journey across Asia along the old Silk Road

Crescent Moon Lake and the Singing Sand Dunes

The Crescent Moon Lake is an Oasis in the Gobi Desert six miles south of the city of Dunhuang.  It has become a major and - in typical PRC fashion - well organised tourist attraction with camel, ATV and sled rides offered on the huge dunes that surround the lake.  There is a cluster of temples and other buildings around the lake, with lots of Buddhist statues and paintings.

The Singing Sand Dune [more correctly called Mingsha Hill] starts from the Mogao Grottoes in the east and is 40 km from east to west and 20 km from north to south.  The Crescent Moon Lake is at the northern foot of Mingsha Hill.
