The Palace of Khudayar Khan in Kokand
The Palace was built by Khudayar Khan the last ruler of the Kokand Khanate in 1871. It originally occupied a total four acres with a foundation 10 feet thick. It is said that it required 16,000 conscripted or enslaved workers for its construction and that when finished it consisted of seven courtyards and one hundred and nineteen rooms.
Today just two courtyards and nineteen rooms remain and the Palace operates as a museum of local history.
I thought the whole place was brilliantly impressive: it was certainly difficult to absorb the idea that it originally had five times as many rooms!
