A 7500 mile journey across Asia along the old Silk Road

Binglingsi Caves and the Yellow River Gorge

The Binglingsi Caves and Temple has a series of grottoes filled with Buddhist sculpture carved into natural caves and caverns in a canyon alongside the Yellow River, just north of where the river empties into the huge Liujiaxia Reservoir.

The first grotto was begun in about 420 AD and work continued for about a thousand years, constantly being added through the various dynasties.  There are 183 caves, 694 stone statues and 82 clay sculptures that have survived the centuries of earthquakes, erosion and looting.
