There are eight huge bas-reliefs around the base of the Monument, each one depicting a 'major' revolutionary episode. For example the first, chronologically, records the destruction of opium at Humen in the run up to the First Opium War. The most recent records the crossing of the Yangtze River in the Chinese Civil War in 1949.
