Another of the few original structures remaining from the Hippodrome: this is called the Walled Obelisk and was built in the 10th Century by the Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus who originally covered it with gilded bronze plates. There were stolen by Latin troops in the Fourth Crusade and what survives is the stone core of the monument.
