The island on which the city of Jiaohe stands is 1650 metres in length and 300 metres wide at its widest point. Many of the residential buildings were not constructed in the traditional sense, but were simply carved out of the loess soil, much like cave dwellings. Most of the houses were two storied with one story below ground and one above.
